Check the origin time

Recent large earthquakes and their aftershocks stay on the map for a while, so a magnitude 6 from last week can look like today’s news. Click the event and read the origin time. Larger quakes get their own event pages that are easy to share.

How to use this view

  1. Launch with Earthquakes only.
  2. Click a circle and read time, depth, magnitude and place.
  3. Open the event page if you plan to share it.
  4. Add flights only if airports are part of the story.

Data source, update rate, and limits

Earthquakes come from the USGS earthquake catalog and refresh about every 2 minutes. Tsunami alerts and GDACS disaster alerts are also free layers. GodsView Plus adds alerts for M4.5+ earthquakes.

This is not an early-warning system. Follow official agencies for tsunami warnings and safety guidance. Magnitudes and locations can be revised as USGS reviews an event, and the 3D view is a visualization, not a model of the crust.

Questions

Does this show earthquakes today?

Yes. It shows the recent USGS feed, including today’s events. Click any event and check its origin time.

Does GodsView replace USGS?

No. GodsView displays the USGS catalog on a live map. USGS and your national seismic agency remain the authoritative sources.

Why is an older quake still on the map?

The feed keeps recent significant events and their aftershocks for a period. Always read the time.

Can I see flights over the epicenter?

Yes. Once you understand the earthquake, add Aircraft to see traffic over the area.

Where is the wildfire map?

On its own page, the live wildfire map. Keeping the two hazards separate by default keeps each view readable.
