Fires Near You, Not Fires on the Other Side of Earth
The first version of the desk was a little too honest about fire. NASA FIRMS loves a strong FRP. Australia and the Amazon will always win a global beauty contest. We printed Near you on those cards anyway. People clicked and landed in another hemisphere. That was on us.
What it does now
If we have your city or a GPS pin, we keep fires inside roughly 200 km. The card says 57 km southwest of you, not a slogan. Click it and the globe goes to that pixel. If we do not have a place, the card says Live map and we do not pretend it is your backyard.
FRP 1 next to a city is often a flare, a mill, or a field. FRP 90 in timber is a different conversation. The number is heat, not acres, not an evacuation order.
A sane morning
- Set a city on World if the browser will not share location.
- Read the distance. If it is 1,200 km, it is not near you.
- Fly there. Then open the incident page before you text anyone.
Watch this place if you want the pin to stay in your pocket. The map should earn a second look. It should not cry wolf from Georgia when you live in Philly.
