Volcanoes erupting or restless right now

NASA EONET currently has 32 open volcanic events across 16 countries, the most in Indonesia (7). 10 of them show thermal hot spots within 10 km of the summit in the latest NASA FIRMS satellite data, a sign of lava or a hot vent (or nearby fires).

Hot spots right now: Kilauea (29), Sangay (11), Lewotolok (8), Nevados de Chillan (5), Langila (5), Acatenango (5). More hot spots usually means more lava at the surface, though cloud cover can hide an eruption from the satellites.

An open event means an agency reported eruptive activity or unrest; it stays open until activity is reported to have ended, so some volcanoes stay listed for months. Each volcano page adds the earthquakes USGS located within 50 km in the past 30 days, nearby airports and what an ash cloud would mean for flights.

Recent significant eruptions

Volcanoes not reported active today whose last significant eruption (NOAA NCEI) was in 1990 or later, newest first. Lewotobi (2025) is the most recent; 25 of these 25 had a significant eruption in the past decade. NCEI counts an eruption as significant when it caused deaths, major damage, a tsunami or a large explosive eruption (VEI 6+).
