What a Severe Thunderstorm Warning means

A thunderstorm producing hail one inch in diameter or larger and/or winds of 58 mph (93 km/h) or stronger is occurring or imminent. Some severe storms can produce tornadoes with little warning.

What to do during a Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Move indoors to a sturdy building away from windows, bring in or secure loose objects, and avoid driving through the storm core. Lightning can strike well ahead of the rain.

Watch vs warning vs advisory

A watch means the ingredients are in place and the hazard is possible: be prepared. A warning means the hazard is happening, imminent or very likely: act now to protect life and property. An advisory is for less severe conditions that are still a nuisance or risky, and a statement is information that falls below those levels.

The companion product to the Severe Thunderstorm Warning is the Severe Thunderstorm Watch, with 0 active now.
