What a Tornado Warning means

A tornado has been sighted by spotters or indicated by weather radar, and it is happening now or about to happen in the warned area. Warnings are drawn as storm-based polygons covering the path the storm is expected to take, and usually last 15 to 45 minutes.

What to do during a Tornado Warning

Take shelter immediately: go to a basement or an interior room without windows on the lowest floor, cover your head and neck. Leave mobile homes and vehicles for a sturdy building. Do not wait to see the tornado.

Watch vs warning vs advisory

A watch means the ingredients are in place and the hazard is possible: be prepared. A warning means the hazard is happening, imminent or very likely: act now to protect life and property. An advisory is for less severe conditions that are still a nuisance or risky, and a statement is information that falls below those levels.

The companion product to the Tornado Warning is the Tornado Watch, with 0 active now.
