What a Winter Storm Warning means
Hazardous winter weather is occurring, imminent or very likely: heavy snow, often combined with sleet, freezing rain or strong wind, that will make travel very difficult or impossible. Criteria vary by local office; many use roughly 6 inches (15 cm) of snow in 12 hours or 8 inches in 24 hours.
What to do during a Winter Storm Warning
Avoid travel if you can. If you must drive, carry a winter kit (blanket, food, water, shovel, charged phone), keep the fuel tank full and tell someone your route. Prepare for power cuts at home.
Watch vs warning vs advisory
A watch means the ingredients are in place and the hazard is possible: be prepared. A warning means the hazard is happening, imminent or very likely: act now to protect life and property. An advisory is for less severe conditions that are still a nuisance or risky, and a statement is information that falls below those levels.
The companion product to the Winter Storm Warning is the Winter Storm Watch, with 1 active now.
